| Given the great disparities between the east and west regions of the country, Slovenia has set up a lot of joint initiatives between the ministry of health, social affairs and economy to tackle these regional inequalities. The work in the Pomurje region was the first time that such a direct initiative was put in place that dealt with inequality issues; and that health was part of the regional development agenda. WHO concept of "investment in health and development" was used effectively to motivate local and regional stakeholders. Also, financial measures were put forward that were granted to innovative regional projects that aimed to tackle health inequalities in certain areas of the country. There are now several health promotion projects and interventions throughout the region. These include healthy lifestyle promotion, employment initiatives, small enterprise development, and promoting the accessibility of nutritious food. An overview of regional policy responses addressing health inequalities can be found in our Policy Database. |
