Aim and objectives

DETERMINE (2007-2010) is an EU wide initiative to stimulate action on the social and economic determinants of health inequities. Work is carried out in the context of seven work packages, which are led by different organizations. EuroHealthNet, in collaboration with the Czech Institute of Public Health (contract holder), coordinates the project. Click here for an overview of DETERMINE’s structure and its aims and objectives.

DETERMINE complements the work of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health (2005-2008), which brings together evidence on policies that improve health by addressing the social conditions in which people live and work.

About this Portal

This Portal was first developed in the context of the Closing the Gap initiative (2003-2007). DETERMINE follows-up on the work undertaken in Closing the Gap, but incorporates a SDH focus. One of the DETERMINE work strands (Health in All Policies/Evidence and Transferability) has identified various initiatives by the central governments as well as other government sectors to address the social-determinants of health inequalities. These findings have been included in the National Level Policies (NLP) section. Initiatives to improve the health of vulnerable people have also been identified under Innovative Approaches work strand, and incorporated into the Directory of Good Practices. DETERMINE also seeks to understand what works to influence those in other policy areas to ensure better opportunities to good health for all, and to Raise Awareness and Build Capacity in this area.
